Viognier, Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc: white wine Elleboro IGT Toscana

The quality of row material is fundamental to produce an excellent wine: here is the industry of Podere Conca

Viognier is one of the three grape varieties of  Elleboro. It is a white berry vine from uncertain origin: probably it has originated in the Rhone area. Its history is much troubled, because after being almost vanished, it got back to top in the last years of 1900.

The name Viognier comes from the Celtic language, in which it means “forest”. Even if it has been always much appreciated, he suffered the condition in which it was cultivated, for example due to phylloxera, which reduced the cultivations to only 14 hectares in 1965.

Fortunately, this grape was saved thanks to the commitment of many farmers, who have not given up allowing its return: today, Viognier is one of the most widespread and appreciated grapes in the world.

Podere Conca Bolgheri viognier Elleboro

Viognier exists also in Italy, and  Bolgheri, is one of highest concentration areas, where Podere Conca is located. Here, since 2015, the production of excellent Tuscan wines has started, besides the olive grove that has been producing delicious organic extra virgin olive oil since always.

Podere Conca Elleboro and the Role of Viognier

Whist olive grove has ever been the protagonist at Podere Conca, the vineyards are a recent choice due to the course attended by Silvia Cirri, owner of the Podere, at the Associazione Italiana Sommelier.
After the course, Silvia involved her nephew Giovanni Gastel Jr. and her friend Livio Aloisi: the project was the cultivation of vineyards at Podere Conca, the family ownership since generations. Obviously, they had to choose which to put first. For Agapanto red wine the choice was Ciliegiolo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, while for Elleboro white wine the selection included Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and just Viognier.

Organoleptic Notes

Elleboro is a Tuscan wine ideal for aperitifs, entrées, and fish dishes. Its bouquet offers scents of yellow fruits, apricot and peach in particular; it has a fresh acidity in the mouth that makes it ideal for a light meal.

Elleboro grapes are aged in stainless steel and in the bottle.

The result is an excellent wine that together with Agapanto represents Tuscany in Italy and in the world.
